Fly Fishing Southern Italy
Have you ever heard your grandparents say, “Back in my day, the small river behind the house was full of wild trout… big ones, everywhere”?
Well, in this part of Italy, that story is still true.
Just 1 hour and 20 minutes from Naples International Airport, three rivers — the Sangro, the Volturno and the Cavalieri — have seen no stocking for over forty years. Yet, the density of large, wild Mediterranean trout is remarkable.
The reasons are not entirely clear. It may be the abundance of insects, the low fishing pressure, or simply a perfect combination of factors. What is certain is that landing four or five trout over two kilograms in a single day, often sight fishing in small streams, is not unusual here.
This is arguably one of the best places in Southern Europe to catch large, pure Mediterranean trout.
Leaving Naples and the Mount Vesuvius behind, you enter the wild landscapes of the Abruzzo and Molise Apennines. Early in the season, snow can still cover the peaks, while in summer it becomes a perfect escape from the heat of the city. Beyond the fishing, the area offers outstanding local cuisine, the beautiful Carpinone Waterfalls and a network of scenic hiking trails.

Meeting point
Isernia
Nestled in the heart of Molise, Isernia is a fascinating city rich in history, offering a mix of ancient ruins, medieval architecture and breathtaking natural landscapes. It is the ideal starting point for our excursions in the southern Apennines.
Catches & Tecnique for Fly Fishing Southern Italy
Fishing techniques in these rivers near Naples vary significantly throughout the season. Early in the year, depending on temperatures but typically from February through April, nymph fishing is the most effective approach. This is often done using tight-line techniques with larger flies and relatively strong tippet, usually no lighter than 0.16 mm. It is the best time to target the biggest predatory fish.
As temperatures rise, those same trout begin feeding on the surface, taking advantage of delicate hatches and, toward the evening, the large moths typical of the area. During this period, the flats of the Volturno become the stage for spectacular rises and highly technical dry fly sessions, where long leaders, finer tippets and smaller patterns are essential.
Our preferred rod to adapt across techniques is a 10-foot 3-weight, offering versatility between nymphing and dry fly fishing. For pure dry fly situations, however, a shorter 7-foot 3-weight is often the perfect choice. It is no coincidence that right here, on the Sangro, the TLT (Tecnica di Lancio Totale) was developed, one of the most distinctive dry fly casting styles in Europe. The Sangro even hosts a dedicated museum and a statue honoring fly fishing, a testament to the deep cultural roots of the sport in this region.
This corner of the Apennines is, in every sense, a hidden gem of Southern European fly fishing.
