Fly fishing
9ft, 6-7 WT
Fly fishing on the Limay River has become something legendary. Hidden from most people in recent years, the Limay remains an unspoiled gem: fishing is only allowed with rowboats, no engines, and exclusively with fly fishing gear. The trout are literally giants, driven by reproductive instincts to leave the waters of Nahuel Huapi for spawning.
This transforms the Limay into a true fly fishing paradise: crystal-clear waters, beautiful riffles, and enormous lake trout that rival the sea-run trout of the Rio Grande. The Limay is undoubtedly one of the best rivers in the world for attempting the catch of a lifetime.
On this expedition, we depart early at dawn, drifting down the Limay in a wooden boat from Lake Nahuel Huapi for approximately 15 km. We will also pass through the amphitheater, a river bend among the most spectacular places in Patagonia. This is not just a day of fishing; it’s a plunge into the past. It’s as if you were transported to prehistoric times with a fishing rod and a guide who knows everything about this environment. Just do one thing: enjoy it.
Catches & tecnique for fishing Limay river
Run trout in the Limay River can reach weights of up to 33 lbs. They typically strike large streamers but can also be caught with nymphs, and sometimes they rise to the surface to feed.
Fishing is done downstream, with the rowboat carried by the current. Anglers cast towards the riverbank, retrieving the streamer towards the center of the river. Strikes usually occur either as soon as the streamer hits the water or at the end of the drift when the line is parallel to the riverbank. The battles with these fish are incredible, made even more challenging by their weight, the current, and the excitement of fishing from a rowboat.
This fly fishing technique is peculiar, but your guide has years of experience on the river and will lead you through this incredible adventure.
