The Dolomites aren’t as famous as nearby Slovenia for massive marble trout, but they share the same river basin, and the fish are just as impressive. This is still an untouched paradise, free from mass fishing tourism. It’s the kind of fishing day you could remember forever.
Hunting for marble trout is a special challenge: you need to know where these predators hide and when they come out to feed. It’s not easy unless you know the river inside out.
The karst waters of the Dolomites are home to pure, wild marble trout that are incredibly tough to catch. But it’s not just about the fish: the scenery is incredible, with the Dolomites of Cortina and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo towering around you.
It’s one of those days where the thrill of chasing the fish of a lifetime competes with the joy of soaking in the stunning landscape.
Luckily, you’ll have an exceptional local guide to help you do both.
And don’t worry, you’ll also get to enjoy a delicious local meal because, let’s be honest, you can’t go wrong with food in Veneto!
Catches & tecnique for fishing the Dolomites
Marble trout, often called the "queen of the Alps," are a prized species native to the Alpine region. Known for their impressive size, some can grow up to 10kg. These smart and cunning predators are a challenging target for any angler.
During our excursion, we will use fly fishing techniques, casting nymphs and small streamers with a floating line upstream.
The best time to catch marble trout in the Dolomites is in spring, when cooler weather and higher water levels provide ideal conditions. However, fishing remains good until October.
For this trip, guides use 9ft 4-5 WT rods to cast nymphs or small streamers. This subtle approach ensures efficient and quiet fishing, minimizing disturbance to these elusive fish.
