Embark on a fishing day dedicated to targeting the elusive wild grayling in the River Ansiei, a charming tributary of the Piave. This pristine location is renowned for its vibrant grayling activity, where you can observe these intelligent fish engaging with nymphs and emergents at the river's bottom, and attacking mayflies and sedges on the surface. Such behavior often results in spectacular rises and thrilling dry fly fishing moments.
The River Ansiei features a diverse aquatic landscape, including long riffles, deep holes, and fast streams, making it an ideal spot for employing various fishing techniques from small streamers to dry flies. Our adventure will begin in the morning as you approach the river. Your guide will introduce the most effective techniques and fly choices based on the current conditions and season.
After four hours of morning fishing, we'll enjoy a lunch break in the scenic Ansiei valley, nestled within the Dolomites. A light meal amidst this natural beauty will rejuvenate us for the afternoon session.
Post-lunch, we will continue our pursuit, exploring new spots along the river for another eight hours of fishing.
Catches & tecnique for fishing the Dolomites
Known for their selectiveness and intelligence, graylings are often referred to as “shadows” due to their elusive nature. However, the challenge they present makes catching one on a dry fly one of the most rewarding experiences in European angling. These magnificent fish can grow up to 50cm and weigh as much as 1.5 kg.
The River Ansiei teems with a rich variety of flies, including mayflies and sedges, setting the stage for dynamic dry fly and nymph fishing. The recommended equipment for this river includes a 9-10 ft rod for a 4wt line, perfect for the varied demands of the Ansiei.
The grayling fishing season extends from March to October.
